In continuation of Lamborghini’s naming their cars after bull’s the Reventón is named after the bull which famously killed matador Felix Guzman in 1943. The Reventón is powered by the same 6.5 liter V12 as the Murciélago LP640 but gets an extra twenty horsepower out giving it a total of six hundred and sixty horsepower, the top speed of the three hundred and forty kilometers per hour. The car features very distinct styling both inside and outside which is inspired by aircraft and the body is made entirely of carbon fiber as well as significant portions of the interior. The car features all LED and Xenon headlights which is a first in the automotive industry. A radically improved one, too. The engine, gearbox and brakes are all new, the suspension has been heavily tweaked and the body, as well as losing its roof, has lost over 20cm of metalwork lengthways. As a result, the Spyder is more compact, better proportioned and arguably more visually aggressive than the coupe that came before it, only missing the original's distinctive 'boomerang' tail-lights. Maserati plans to head back into the US next year following a 12-year absence and market research has shown that potential customers over there weren't keen on them. A shame.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even so, the Spyder looks pretty sensational, even with the hood up. Swiftly stow this away behind a solid, body-coloured cover, via the prod of a button and the whirring of electrohydraulic gubbins, and it looks better still. The drama is increased further by 18-inch, 15-spoke wheels, a pair of part leather-trimmed roll-hoop covers and a quartet of exhaust pipes. Pootling through Bologna's mediaeval backstreets, the latter emit the most fantastic burbling noise. This is a car that sounds as though it should be stupidly quick, even when it's scarcely moving.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In place of the standard car's six-speed manual 'box, I'm driving the Cambiocorsa version (it means 'racing gearshift') complete with the latest development of the F1 paddle-shift transmission also available for the Ferrari 360 Modena and Spider. As with those cars, it's got a fully automatic function - now offering smooth rather than jerky shifts while toddling through the traffic. Driving over countless cobbles and discarded espresso cups also exposes a smidge of body shake transmitted up through the steering wheel, the penalty for losing the bracing provided by the coupe's solid roof.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Such oomph is provided by a new lightweight, all-aluminium, naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8, replacing the twin-turbo V8 of the 3200GT. It's due to be fitted to the coupe sometime next year, while rumour has it that elements of this powerplant will be developed for a future generation of Ferraris.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Soon the smart chrome-ringed instruments are indicating 200kph, very fast, yet with a 283kph (175mph) maximum still available. The engine feels so lively even at these speeds that it's undoubtedly got a huge amount more to come if asked for, but I prefer to cruise along steadily for now. Comfort levels are generally impressively high, wind buffeting being kept well suppressed by the optional deflector strapped between the roll hoops on our test Spyder. Remember, it's a crime to ruffle the coiffure of the boss of an exotic Italian car company (or two).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Spyder's fully adjustable driving position is a step up from the gibbon-like posture demanded by previous Maseratis I've sat in, while the leather-clad seats are suitably pliant. The dashboard is handsomely swoopy, the traditional rugby-ball shaped clock is still there (no longer in Ratners-style gold plate), while the switches on the centre console sadly remain as unremarkable as many Fiats'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A hike of 20bhp over its predecessor's already sizeable 370bhp output accounts only in part for the claim that the Spyder is the faster car - by more than five seconds - around Ferrari's Fiorano F1 test track. It also now handles better. On the road, it certainly isn't. Our car came with the 'Skyhook' adaptive damping system (again an option) linked up to accelerometers on the body and wheels. This system has already helped keep the Spyder's ride quality respectably supple while I've been travelling sedately along and is now beefing itself up to maintain the car's poise as it senses a return to hilly hairpins.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Spyder's steering is a little light, if very direct, the brakes offer plenty of feel and never show any tendency to fade, while the standard-issue traction control device is regularly called upon to keep things in order as I find myself playing with the engine's full grunt. Through here the Spyder isn't quite so confidence-inspiringly settled as a 911 would be. Dawn has the water sparkling among the yachts in Monaco, and dusk promises some of the world’s best pasta in a family-run restaurant near the Ferrari factory in Italy. And to get from one to the other we have a new plaything, the 199mph Superamerica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The world’s most desirable convertible - and one of the fastest - is named after a series of limited-edition Ferraris built between 1956 and 1961 (“America” denotes a special body, “super” means more power under the bonnet). Then, limited meant 10. In today’s world it means 559, but otherwise this car does for us what its forebears did for society’s A-list of the 1950s.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So it has a special body, a clever roof and an explosive engine. Does this justify the highest price tag in Ferrari’s range? We shall see.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A 200mph convertible for my amusement. That was the F50, a 520bhp machine with a Formula One-derived engine that you can now buy used for £200,000 or so. Which is the cost of a Superamerica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1996 you needed a mechanic to remove the roof. Today you can open the lid in seven seconds. There is more to the roof than that, but first we need to know if this is a true Ferrari. Let’s do the Monte Carlo test. There are 550 Ferraris in Monaco, where the sound of an Italian V8 is as normal as the wail of a Porsche in Chelsea. V12s are less common, but the test of any car is the tourists outside the casino.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A real Ferrari needs aural and visual drama and yet to be in good taste. Today a bright red Fiat 500 is enjoying attention. After I arrive, people break away to pose for photographs by the Superamerica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They are right: the new model might be derived from the 575M, a car that is beautiful only in certain combinations of colour and light, but it is a handsome machine. It also has a breakthrough so simple you wonder why nobody thought of it before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’ll explain: when you see a convertible with the roof up on a perfect day, usually it is because the baby’s buggy is in the boot. There is nowhere for the roof to go. Well, the Superamerica roof does not fold into the boot, nor does it collapse like the fabric pram roofs of old. It rotates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Times Online logo&lt;br /&gt;When opened, the roof flips backwards until it rests flat above the boot lid. The now inverted rear window become a wind deflector. Which makes this one practical supercar. Since the roof no longer needs to fold it can be made of glass; and this glass can be tinted at will. A control in the cabin selects one of five degrees of light or privacy. With the engine off the glass goes dark to protect the interior from the sun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The roof-and-engine combo that sets the Superamerica apart from the “standard” 575M will set you back £35,600. That’s on top of the £163,200 for the 575M with the F1 box. Ensure you tick the Handling GTC option, too (better suspension and brakes, £14,455) and a pair of Ferrari shields on the front wings (£1,050). That makes £214,305.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The money buys a car within fractions of the performance of the F50, one of the most outrageous Ferraris of all time. The 532bhp Superamerica is not a replacement for the F50 — that was the Enzo — but the fact that they can be compared, even though this is a touring car, shows how quick it is. You can get it in right-hand drive, too. And with the classic open-gate manual gearbox.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;he paddle-shift F1 gearbox is now so smooth that I set off in Sport mode and didn’t notice. Is it a proper Ferrari? It’s a modern automated traction-controlled machine. And yet it drives best from the scruff of the neck. On the twisting motorway into Italy it responds best to slow-in, fast-out, so that you accelerate through the turns. Slow is relative, of course — it’s in three figures — and traffic means you get little chance for fast-out. So you travel with the Audis and Boxsters but work harder, because cars that corner best under an assertive right foot are not so happy on a steady throttle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s a good sign. Later, on a back road near the Ferrari factory, the promise is fulfilled, given its head this is a satisfying supercar. It feels more focused with the roof up and more dramatic with it down, because of the louder engine. Up or down, though, it still has aural magnificence. It is a genuine two-in-one car and a great Ferrari. The only possible criticism is that the door does not shut with an expensive-sounding thunk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It has few rivals. If you were considering one of these with the GTC pack (and you’d be mad to accept the standard suspension), you wouldn’t contemplate an Aston Martin DB9 Volante. The Aston is a cruiser — too soft. The Mercedes SL 65 AMG — too ordinary. The real rivals are the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster and the Ferrari F430 Spider. Motorists will park their cars in the middle of the public road and stand on the bridge watching over the grounds, where &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Enzo Ferrari&lt;/span&gt;'s house with the red shutters still stands in the middle of the track.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ferrari maintains the house of the company's founder, who died in 1988, and still stocks his office with the purple pens he preferred to use. For Ferrari fans, visiting the grounds is exciting, but not as exciting as roaring through Fiorano's hairpin turns in the new 612 Scaglietti 2+2.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;612 Scaglietti&lt;/span&gt; is not only much more comfortable, powerful and expensive than the average 2+2 (like Porsche's 911, a 2+2-seater is a coupe with a tiny backseat that is in some cases uninhabitable), it is the newest flagship--not counting the limited-edition, $652,000 Enzo Ferrari supercar, which is sold out--from the company that has an extraordinarily emotional relationship with automobiles. Maranello, Ferrari's headquarters, is steeped in pride and enthusiasm for the company. A father held his little girl's hand on the public side of Fiorano's gates so that both could watch journalists leaving the grounds in a parade of 612s.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;612 Scaglietti&lt;/span&gt;, the replacement for Ferrari's 456M, will go on sale this September at an estimated price of $250,000. Ferrari will send 120 to 130 612s to the United States in the first year, but 200 orders have already been placed; the first 18 months' supply is sold. While this should be no surprise to people who are waiting two or three years for Ferrari's "entry-level" 360 Modena or six to 12 months for its 12-cylinder 575M Maranello coupe, the wait cannot be avoided because Ferrari limits its production so that its inventory will run out. In other words, if Michael Jordan walked into a Ferrari dealership and asked for a new car for that afternoon, he might not be able to get it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which is not to say &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;that Ferrari doesn't have competition&lt;/span&gt;. Bentley, which is now owned by Volkswagen, is planning to introduce its own 2+2, the $150,000 Continental GT, which will go on sale in April or May. The Continental GT will cost $100,000 less than the 612, and will beat it both in horsepower (552 vs. 540) and torque (479 lb.-ft. vs. 434). The Continental GT scares Ferrari. When the Italians heard that it would have a top speed of 198 mph, they increased the 612's top speed to 199 mph. Hardly a trouncing, but if they couldn't beat Bentley in horsepower, they could at least win top speed by a hair.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite Bentley, the 612 Scaglietti is still a surefire moneymaker for Ferrari for the following reasons:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;It's the new Ferrari.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Ferrari sells every vehicle it makes, and makes a profit on every vehicle it sells.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;The company skipped the cost of developing a new engine by adapting the 575M Maranello's V-12 to power the 612.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Ferrari is on a mission to rethink its expenses. The company does not want to increase its volume or raise the prices of its cars. Instead, "There is a big fight inside Ferrari to reduce the cost of building and distributing the cars," according to Amedeo Felisa, director of Ferrari's GT cars department.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;By keeping volume fixed at 4,000 to 4,400 cars per year (about 30% of Ferrari production is for the U.S., its biggest market), Ferrari can perpetuate its own prestige. Those waiting lists indicate that Ferrari is undersupplying demand, and that people are willing to forgive its exorbitant pricing for the joy of owning one of the world's finest automobiles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Indeed, the 612 Scaglietti is maybe &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;the best car we've ever tested&lt;/span&gt;. Should you have the good fortune to drive it on the Fiorano track, you will not be disappointed (but don't wear big shoes, particularly if they're square-toed. If you need to brake hard in an instant, the pedals are placed such that a nonracing shoe might stick a bit to the gas when you need it to be completely on the brake). Since most of us who have the chance to drive a Ferrari do not get to do it at Ferrari headquarters, you will also be delighted to know that the 612 Scaglietti is just as fun in public. It will make you want to control its raw power from its supple leather bucket seats all day long.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the main reasons why the 612 works as well in the countryside as on the track is its inviting F1 gearbox--a pair of paddle shifters on either side of the wheel (a six-speed stick-shift is also available; there is no optional automatic transmission). The forthcoming &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Ferrari-owned Maserati Quattroporte&lt;/span&gt; sedan uses a similar gearbox and is another example of the rare Italian exotic that features a backseat. The paddle shifters on both the Ferrari and the Maserati--transmission types known as sequential manual gearboxes--have automatic modes that can change the gears for you; these are not automatic transmissions, but clutchless manual transmissions that shift automatically.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of the two cars, the &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Maserati &lt;/span&gt;was intended to be the more polite, family-oriented vehicle--but its gearbox is woefully less smooth than the Ferrari's. While shifting the gears manually in either car is a delight, the automatic mode of the 612 Scaglietti is seamless, whereas the feature in the Maserati is incredibly clunky. The Maserati's gearbox has a power lag between shifts in automatic mode, which causes the vehicle's weight to lurch forward.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ferrari will work out the kinks in Maserati, the Modena-based manufacturer it took over in 1997. (Fiat (nyse: FIA - news - people ) owns both carmakers.) It's worth it, because sharing components with Maserati will be a great help in Ferrari's quest to reduce costs. When the replacement for the 360 Modena coupe goes on sale at the end of 2005 (its name will probably change), Ferrari is likely to import the 4.2-liter V-8 used on all Maseratis into its overhauled two-door. This would be the first engine shared between the companies; they have yet to share any platforms, the sets of hardware that underpin cars.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A replacement for the &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;360 Modena Spider&lt;/span&gt; convertible will appear approximately 1.5 years after the new coupe, but Ferrari will not offer a second generation of its 360 Challenge Stradale, a street-legal race car. Ferrari will replace the coupe that bridges the 360 and 612, the mid-level 575M Maranello, in 2007 or 2008. The overhauled car is under development (temporarily named "F141") and will use an adaptation of the Enzo Ferrari supercar's V-12. Look for the 575M replacement at an auto show in 2007. The company will wait five or six years before building another Enzo-like supercar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the 612 coming on board, Ferrari feels like its lineup fills all of its needs. One 2+2-seater is enough, the company says, as is one convertible. The news about Ferrari's future products is all about revisions to its existing roster. When Ferrari overhauls a car, it ordinarily changes its name, as it will for the 360 and 575 replacements. The names describe the engines: 612 = roughly 6 liters and 12 cylinders; 575 = a 5.75-liter engine; and 360 = a 3.6-liter engine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The cost-cutting efforts and Ferrari's plans to maintain its current size mean that no entirely new vehicle lines are on the horizon, but also that Ferrari will not make major changes to its preferred characteristics. The company has no plans to use all-wheel drive, automatic transmission, turbo-charging or supercharging on any of its cars. If anything could change, it is Ferrari's philosophy about engines. The company offers only V-8s and V-12s. Don't expect to see a V-16 Ferrari, but the company builds V-10s for Formula One and could transfer one into a production car, according to an executive at Ferrari Maserati North America who insisted on anonymity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ferrari likes to stick with what works.
